Art Alert: Seminar at French Institute explores portrayal of women in Ramadan serials

A seminar titled "Women in Ramadan Drama 2018" will be held at the French Institute in Cairo on Monday evening.

The seminar is organised by the online platform Wlaha Wogoh Okhra, and looks at the portrayal of women and women’s issues in television serials airing this Ramadan.

One of the subjects the seminar will focus on is "violence according to social status," and what the serials reveal about Egyptian society's underlying infrastructure, and how they re-enforce patriarchal social structures.

Three speakers will lead the main discussion; critic Essam Zakaria, journalist Karima Gamal, singer Fairouz Karawya, with the director of Wlaha Wogoh Okhra, Ranim El-Afifi, as moderator.

Zakaria is a journalist, author, and director of the Ismailia International Film festival for shorts and documentaries.

Gamal writes at El-Mary El-Youm paper where she also serves as editorial advisor, She is also an activist in the field of women's issues. She received the Editorial Leadership award from the WAN-IFRA's programme Women in News in 2017.

Karawya is a singer, composer and theatre actress. She is the manager of Merayat project which monitors and analyses Ramadan serials in 2017 and 2018 from a female perspective.

Attendance is free and open to the public. The discussion will be in Arabic.
